15 giorni fa, il tempo era cosi bello che abbiamo deciso dopo tanto tempo di fare un giretto in bici nelle vicinanze di Mesagne.

A un momento, durante la nostra passeggiata, abbiamo trovato dei campi di panelli solari.
At a point, during our promenade, we found fields of solar panels.
Ma la cosa curiosa, è stato di vedere una piccola cappella con attorno a lei questi panelli solari.
But the curious thing was to see a small chapel with those solar panels around it.

La Santa padrona della città di Mesagne è La Madonna Del Carmelo.
The protector of the city of Mesagne is the Madonna of Carmelo.
La festeggiamo il 15, 16, 17 Luglio di ogni anno e il 20 febbraio.
We celebrate her the 15th, 16 th, 17th of July in each year and the 20th of febraury.
D’estate, la sera del 15, 16, 17 Luglio, ci sono bancarelle attorno alla villa comunale di Mesagne.
In the summer, in the evening of the 15th, 16th, 17th of July, there are a lot of stand around the villa municipal of Mesagne.
La circolazione al traffico è proibito la sera. Cosi la gente può fare una bella passeggiata sotto le luce delle illuminazioni fatta a posto per questa celebrazione.
The traffic is forbidden the evening. So people can enjoy a walk under the light of lighting made for this celebration.
Dirigendosi verso la villa, vediamo che la gente appende alle loro porte dei lampioni.
Heading towards the villa, we see that people hang on their doors streetlights.

Quando arriviamo alla porta Grande, possiamo ammirare le bellissime decorazione luminose. Sotto queste possiamo sentire un po di musica.

And now a little of history…
La festa, voluta dai monaci carmelitani, ha origini antichissime.
The celebration, wanted by the Carmelite monks, has ancient origins.
La tradizione vuole che, il primo profeta di Israele, Elia (IX secolo a.c), dimorando sul monte Carmelo in Palestina, ebbe la visione della venuta della Vergine, che si alzava come una piccola nube dalla terra verso il monte, portando la pioggia e salvando Israele dalla siccità.
According to tradition, the first prophet of Israel, Elijah (IX century BC), dwelling on Mount Caramel in Palestine, had a vision of the coming from the Virgin, which is like a small cloud from the earth to the mountain, bringing rain and save Israel from the drought.

In this image all the mystics Christians and the commentators have always seen the Virgin Mary.
Il 16 Luglio del 1251 la Vergine , circondata da angeli e con il Bambino in braccio, riapparve al Padre Generale dell’Ordine dei Carmelitani, Simone Stock, al quale consegnò uno scapolare (una striscia di stoffa che i monaci indossavano durante il lavoro manuale) che avrebbe liberato dalle pene dell’inferno chiunque lo avesse indossato.
On 16th of July 1251, the Virgin surrounded by angels and the Child in her arms, appeared to the Father General of the Order of Carmelites, Simon Stock, who gave a scapular (a strip of cloth that the monks wore during manual work) that would free from the pains of hell, anyone had worn.
Col tempo lo scapolare divenne il simbolo stesso della identità e della vita dei padri carmelitani.
Over time, the scapular became the very symbol of identity and life of the Carmelite Fathers.
A partire dal 1651, anno in cui la Beata Vergine del Carmelo fu proclamata Protettrice della città, anche a Mesagne si celebrano i solenni festeggiamenti in onore della Madonna del Carmine.
Since 1651, when the Blessed Virgin of Caramel was proclaimed protector of the city, also in Mesagne are celebrate the solemn celebrations in the honor of the Madonna of the Carmine.
La festa, una delle più grandi ed importanti dell’intero Salento, si tiene il 15, 16 e il 17 Luglio e rappresenta indubbiamente un grande richiamo per forestieri e turisti.

Il 15 Luglio il simulacro della Vergine, in processione e con grande partecipazione di popolo, viene prelevato dalla Basilica del carmine (posta al di fuori dell’antica cinta muraria) per essere portato in città.
On 15th July the statue of the Virgin in procession with great congregation, is taken from the Basilica del Carmine (placed outside the ancient city wall) to be brought into the city.
A questo punto, nella grande piazza Vittorio Emanuele, si ripete l’antichissimo rito della consegna delle chiavi cittadine alla Vergine, dopodiché il simulacro viene collocato all’interno della chiesa Matrice. Nel pomeriggio del 17 Luglio sono ora i padri carmelitani, custodi tutto l’anno del simulacro, a recarsi in processione in chiesa Matrice per riportare la Madonna nella sua dimora abituale.
At this point, in the great piazza Vittorio Emanuele, repeating the ancient ritual of handing over the keys of the city to the Virgin, after which the statue is placed inside the church Matrice. Per ben tre giorni la città è illuminata a giorno da spettacolari luminarie mentre sulla grande cassa armonica montata proprio a ridosso della Porta Grande si esibiscono le bande musicali ed i cantanti.
For three days the city is brightly by day by spectacular lights and at the same time on the kiosk mounted just behind the main gate,we can see bands and singers.

Il 20 Febbraio 1743 si verificarono tre forti scosse di terremoto che colpirono seriamente la città di Mesagne e l’intero Salento.
On the 20th of February 1743, is occurred three strong earthquakes that struck the city of Mesagne seriously and the whole Salento.
Nonostante la violenza dell’evento sismico non vi furono vittime. I mesagnesi attribuirono lo scampato pericolo alla Vergine del Carmelo.
Despite the violence of the earthquake there were no victimss. The Mesagnesi attributed the escape of danger at the Madonna of Carmine.
Il giorno seguente, benché il tempo fosse inclemente, si recarono ugualmente nel santuario del Carmine, dove era custodito il simulacro della Vergine, per ringraziarla, prelevarla e condurla in processione in chiesa Matrice.
The following day, although the weather was inclement, they also went into the sanctuary of The Madonna of the Carmine, where was guarded the statue of the Virgin, to thank her, they pick up her and carry her in procession to the church Matrice.
Il 27 Aprile 1743 fu riconosciuto dalla congregazione dei riti di Roma l’evento miracoloso e dall’anno successivo fu possibile festeggiare la Vergine in data 20 Febbraio.
On April 27th of 1743, was recognized by the Congregation of Rites in Rome the miraculous event and the next year they could celebrate the Virgin on 20 February.
